Wander Diaries 101- Trip to Mcleodganj and Dharamshala

Trip to Dharamshala-Mcleodganj: amidst the enchanting estate of deodar

If we are meant to stay in one place we’d have roots instead of feet
-Rachel Wolchin

Travel as they say is best remedy to all negativity of the world. One of such a marvelous place where I went with my family was Dharamshala and Mcleodganj.

Mcleodganj is a hill station inhibited by numerous Tibetans at the foot of Dhauladhar range. It is also home to the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader- Dalai Lama. South of this place lies Dharamshala which is famous for its serenity, singing monsoon and friendly Deodar trees. These two places have got one of the most enchanting experience for people of any age.

Here is a little glimpse of this biblical place

So our pleasant journey started with the song Despacito (Just kidding, My family would kill me for it). So, it actually started from city of love and affection- Moga, my hometown and through the dusty roads of Hoshiarpur, We [My Mother, father, sis, grandma and well, of  course, me] managed to reach the place in 7 Tic-Tic hours and stopped at a place called- Bombay Picnic Spot at Chintapurani Road, Himachal Pradesh. A beautiful and reasonable price restaurant cum park. We had our breakfast here and head to the curious land of Mcleodganj.

Place where we stayed

Before that, we went to our room. (We stayed at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports also known as Mountaineering Institute). The place was huge but quite old. It was like living in a museum. Its cost starts from Rs 500 per day (Yes, you read it right; it was this cheap) and the room could accommodate all the 5 of us. The only drawback was its location and its “Kaccha” route.

So, when we landed this mini China (because of sporadic Tibetan population), Dalai Lama temple was the first place of our visit. This place is a quaint paradise, where every corner tells a story, where you could time your every step to the musical chants of ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’, and where the scent of incense lingered in even the dankest gullies, exists. The serenity and peace of this place are ineffable.

The next stop on our list was “Bagsunath Temple”. This place is quite famous for waterfall and “Shiva Café”. I did not get a chance to go there because it was quite far to walk and my grandma bear would have been exhausted.

The first spot

There is a lot of facilities of the taxi (a bit expensive but have to be used for some steep hilly areas. The city center square known as Jogiwara road proudly boasts of Mcloo café, rooftop restaurants and Maggie-Tea shops & through it, we went to Kangra Museum and Kaleshwar Mahadev temple in Kangra.

Picturesque view outside Kangara Museum

The trip would have been incomplete if we have not gone to “THE TEA GARDEN”. Yes, you hear it right, these are not just any garden. These are some magical fields which gives you a total Bollywood feel. It is the best place to pose and get clicked like a superstar. Dazzling lights and the greenery adds to the picturesque like colors do to the black and white. There are lot of Tibetan cafes and MOMO stalls.

Posers at their insane level
Beauty at its peak

As per research, there is also martyr’s memorial which is quite famous for its bridge and reflects a War memorial displaying names of soldiers in a natural setting surrounded by tall trees & gardens. Papa (my father) had a lot of memories with this place as his wild school trip endeavors and a reminder of friendship and it was really worth watch site. We made a lot of Insta boomerang videos and clicked like a dozen of pictures in this place.

The War Memorial bridge

Now It would be a shame if I don’t talk about the one and only famous HPCA Stadium. It is one of the most breathtaking cricket venues. The snow cladding behind the stadium was just mesmerizing. It might look small but is worth a watch.

Heaven of Cricket Stadium- HPCA Stadium

Now comes the turn of Namgyal Monastery whose beauty is worth more than words can just say. The best place to meditate, enjoy the scenery, seek silence and what not. The exile government here is making endless efforts to attract all tourists from in and around the world. It is so beautiful that I would recommend it even to aliens if I ever get a chance to meet them. It is a marvelous place and must add to your Bucket List.

Namgyal Monastery

Talking about monasteries let me introduce you to the Norbulingka Institute, founded in 1988 by Kelsang and Kim Yeshi at Sidhpur, near Dharamshala, India, is dedicated to the preservation of the Tibetan culture in its literary and artistic forms. Amazing architecture, built in a beautiful lap of nature is one such a place which can woo your heart and soul. All you could wish would be to stay forever here. They teach students the Tibetan art form free of cost to people coming from different parts of the world.

Norbulingka Institute

Little did we know that with each minute, we got attached to this place and in our heart and mind leaving it was going to be a painful process.
Having said that It was a 3 day journey and we had the most beautiful sleeps in the world at this “Little Lhasa”.

The journey continued and we visited Dal lake as well as Naddi point and St. John church in the wilderness which are common tourist points. Selfies are must at these places ( an eye wink ;-))

Dal lake and Naddi Point

This place is for the ones who can visit with friends, those who like to make new friends and those who like to trip solo.

Thanks for Tuning In!
To conclude

Thank you for tuning in. Hope you enjoyed the ride!

Graduation Serendipity-Goodbye to all soulmates you found in last four years

A Pic Of Friends

Farewell, Adieu, Sayonara, Alvida & Adios- All these words have the same meaning- Goodbye for the last time, but these are not just words, these are the emotions, these are the feelings from which no one can run away.

The most sentimental place on earth for any graduate student will be a railway station or an airport because this is the place from where you leave your college or move on to a next destination. You are all going to dip your toes into adulthood, real adulthood, and this separation is part of it. We’re not going to live five-person flat anymore where empty bottles of alcohol proudly line up the walls of the balcony and mismatched furniture sits happily together in our second family rooms- our little messy, hectic, chaotic yet beautiful room.

Some of you are going to be in my wedding. Some of you are gonna be godparents or even God grandparents of my children. Some of you will fade away from my life slowly and slowly not because you want it but because life will get in the way. Some of you, I will never see again after I walk away from this place.

But all of you have left a mark on me.

-Kim Quindlen(ThoughtCatalog.com)

I can’t  have all of you, still when all of this is over. I wish I could, but I can’t. Because never again will life be this easy, this smooth & this effortless. Never again I will be surrounded by you, my second family, my support system- I regret that I could not meet you better, I could not know you better, I could not spend time better while your doors were a few feet or a couple blocks away from my own. Gone are those days when we used to complete the work before 1 hour, sitting on chairs, talking all night, chugging coffee and feeling comforted as we prepare for our exams or type our assignments because we feel each other’s warm presence just an inch away.

We were never alone. we couldn’t have been even if we tried.

But soon we all will be heading to different directions. Soon we will be residing in some other part where we would have to adjust to the rough smack of quietness that hits us each time we walk in the door after work. It will be the first time that the silence will be horribly loud. We will work out plans to meet up for happy hours on Friday nights or even fix dates to meet in particular month. It will seem easy and fun at first. We will feel grown up and make our way through busy schedules and travelling weekends.

But as it always does, life will come in the way and these visits will become rare and rare, the meet-ups more sporadic. Our lives will be filled with new relatives, friends and family. New routines, new hangouts and whatnot will come into being. All we could do to connect will be tagging each other on various memes and FB posts to remember that we were something. These candid moments will bring a smile on face and again we will tend to meet up. Things gonna change and that’s okay. You can’t stay in the same bubble, hidden away from all the very things for which we came here to learn about. We have to move on. We have to grow up. We have to work out this friendship in new circumstances because things are always going to change.

What I will remember from this place is that it will hurt because of you. It will hurt because you brought me such joy, laugh, gags and pure happiness. You taught me lessons even you don’t know you taught me. You are part of the reason that I am a different person today than I was before four years ago when I arrived here.

If we ever come back to this place again, it won’t be the same. There will be eventually new buildings, canteens, sidewalks and food joints.  But most of all there will be new energy that we won’t recognise. The place we knew before will only exist in our mind. But what remains immortal will be our moments and experiences because when it exists as a memory, a connection, an energy between you and I, it is safe from upgrades, construction, weather damage, people and anything that will try to alter it.

The four years we spent together, between us,  no matter what happens, will always be here. That’s the safest home these moments could ever have.  And in this moment we are infinite.

Thirteen Reasons Why- The words left unspoken

Thirteen Reasons Why Article

The poem:

Today I am wearing lacy black underwear

For the sole purpose of knowing I am wearing them.

And underneath that?

I am absolutely naked.

And I’ve got skin. Miles and miles of skin;

I’ve got skin to cover all my thoughts

like saran wrap that you can see through

to what leftovers are inside from the night before.

And despite what you might think, my skin is not rough; nor is it bullet proof.

My skin is soft, and smooth, and easily scarred.

But that doesn’t matter, right?

You don’t care about how soft my skin is.

You just want to hear about what my fingers do in the dark.

But what if all they do is crack open windows?

So I can see lightening through the clouds.

What if all they crave is a jungle gym to climb for a taste of fresher air?

What if all they reach for is a notebook or a hand to hold?

But that’s not the story you want.

You are licking your lips and baring your teeth.

Just once I would like to be the direction someone else is going.

I don’t need to be the water in the well.

I don’t need to be the well.

But I’d like to not be the ground anymore.

I’d like to not be the thing people dig their hands in anymore.

Some girls know all the lyrics to each other’s songs.

They find harmonies in their laughter.

Their linked elbows echo in tune.

What if I can’t hum on key?

What if my melodies are the ones nobody hears?

Some people can recognize a tree,

A front yard, and know they’ve made it home.

How many circles can I walk in before I give up looking?

How long before I’m lost for good.

It must be possible to swim in the ocean of the one you love without drowning.

It must be possible to swim without becoming water yourself.

But I keep swallowing what I thought was air.

I keep finding stones tied to my feet.”

-Hannah Baker, 13 Reason’s Why

Thirteen reasons why

The poem Katherine Langford reads out loud as Hannah is actually penned by Sarah Kay

[Don’t worry I am not here to reveal spoilers]

The very catchy dialogue of the series by Hannah was, “Some of you cared, none of you cared enough.”
O.k. sorry.
Here we go,

Thirteen Reasons Why. Even if you haven’t watched it, I’m willing to bet you’ve heard these words floating around the virtual world, or maybe heard it from someone you know? For those who don’t know, it’s a web series, originally released on Netflix. It’s based on a book by Jay Asher in which a teenage girl named Hannah commits suicide after recording her voice in tapes stating 13 reasons (people) why she decided to end her life. This show deals with everything people keep quiet about. Bullying, rape, suicide and mental health, it shows the dark side of being a teenager through a gripping story and graphic screenplay . Though the book was released in 2007, which is when Selena Gomez bought its rights, it’s finally on screen ten years later, and it is amazing.

There is lot to tell about it. But the reason I chose to write about it because no matter how old you are, you must have experienced or seen some type of abuse be it bullying, body shamming, degrading mental health and what not which should be in spotlight more than ever. I do not want to scaremonger but I do wanna flag up what’s out there.

You can’t stop the future.
You can’t rewind the past.
The only way to learn the secret . . . is to press play.

There seems heaviness in all what I just said but it’s an alarming state in our country where peers and families are to blame for the current situation. There is a term used in the series called butterfly effect (Yes that’s Wikipedia) – which in simpler terms mean, small causes can have larger effects. Small things we do in our lives, things that might impact someone’s life and we will never know.

We go through family issues, pressure, stress, uncertainty, heartbreak, and death and what not. But it’s the sensitivity of mind and heart that how we will react to it. Not everyone is born with a lion’s heart. Not everyone is as calm as a turtle.

You might think it is coward to do such an impulsive act but do you think being silent would be the answer. Everything is not always about rainbows and sunshine. Everything is not always about our comforts. Sometimes it is uncomfortable, real and honest. They need to speak out and be heard. That’s all it takes to save and mold their lives. I personally don’t think suicide is glamorous or peaceful. I am glad the writers and producers of this show didn’t portray suicide as anything but that what it is.

At last I wanna say it is responsibility of peers, teachers and even parents to indulge in conversation, & I mean real conversation to understand their Generation-Y kids and vice versa. Because no one wants to listen to their own tapes recorded by the near-ones. I mean all of this devastates not only your own but many other lives. There is help available out there! There are counselors, psychologists and even special friends who are more than willing to help them cope with it. Click here
I hope now you understand why this show is so hyped. I know it is a sensitive issue and hard-to-digest topic but not talking about it might leave us with the minutest possibility of understanding the very reason for living.
Thank you for tuning in. (If you need, I am always there to talk to)

The Thirst Quenchers-Story of Chabeel

When Sarso da Saag met Sambar-Vada

You might have listened to or watched people in Punjab as well as many parts of North India serving rose milk to travelers in highways, streets, markets and what not. Now what is this service called and what is its significance? Is it a social awareness act? Is it some publicity stunt? Is it that people have some mental problem so they are spending money and energy on what others don’t even ask for?

No, no and finally no.

This is none of it what you think of. This service of distributing rose milk, water or any other refreshment drink is known as “Chabeel Sewa” and “CHABEEL” is the place where it is done. It is generally served during Death Anniversary of Fifth guru Guru Arjan Dev in summer season.

Chabeels are organized all over Punjab and Northern India by Sikhs as a remembrance of the torture meted out to their Fifth Guru, Arjan Dev Ji. The story goes like this…

The torture went on for five long days. A Sufi approached the guru and requested the Guru to allow him to undo the burns with his mystic powers. Guru Arjan Dev told him that one must accept the will of God; not a leaf moves without his will.

All of this torture was because the Guru had declined the marriage proposal of the daughter of one Chandu Shah, a successful banker with the Mughals. When Chandu’s daughter-in-law heard about the torture, she bribed the jailor and came to the prison with sherbet and other delicacies to serve the Guru. The Guru declined to accept anything from Chandu’s house but blessed the lady for her faith and devotion.

When the tyrants did not know how further to torture the Guru who had borne all of it with complete equanimity, the Guru asked for a bath in the river Ravi by the side of the Mughal fort in which he was imprisoned. Thousands of his followers watched the Guru walk to the river with tears in their eyes. His bare body glistened with blisters. There were blisters on his feet and he couldn’t even walk properly “Sweet is Your will, O God; the gift of your Name alone I seek.” said the Guru again and again.

Chabeel marks the remembrance to the torture meted out to Guru Arjan Dev Ji and finally the relief that river Ravi provided to him. On any other Gurparv, Langars are organized but it is Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s martyrdom day when Symbolically, Sikhs setup Chabeels on the roadsides to provide relief from the hot scorching sun to travelers.

Water not only quench your thirst but also your ego.

Water has the power to quench not only your thirst but also your ego. During the time of “CHABEEL SEWA”. Everyone be it a man with a BMW car or be it an old lady with a HERO cycle, are considered the equal and unanimous homo sapiens with genes and blood rushing in body. The same body which requires food and water to perform everyday hush-bush tasks. Here is a glimpse of my experience:

What makes you happy can never be destroyed nor created

As we know, Chennai is like the favorite tourist spot of SUN in the month of April, Chabeel seemed to be a brilliant idea. So, my friends got the permission and in the morning we started doing the preparations. All you need for this is not money but a selfless feeling of “SEWA” (service for welfare of others). I am not talking about becoming Mother India but helping others in the every bit you can afford and apply and term for this is called volunteering.

As we grow, we start appreciating little things in life which is what makes us more mature. The amazing heart melting moment when you see the destitute (the poverty stricken people) feeding their tummies with “Rose milk*” and “Samosa**” is the best feeling which gives you some kind of inner peace leaving Goosebumps all over your body.

Serving others is the means to serve thy lord, the guru or the faith you believe in.

*Generally the rose milk contains 4 parts water, 2 parts milk and 1 part Roohafza syrup. Ice is for the effect. This is the most child & refreshing drink which protects your stomach from acidity and internal heat.

**Samosa is an Indian food consisting of vegetables, spices, wrapped in pastry and fried.

One more twist to the story was that very few people knew Hindi in Tamil Nadu, so it provided a very funny flavor to the event as we were asking people like “Waheguru ji, come to chabeel Anna(or Akka), try samosa ma ”
Many and I really mean many of them liked this very concept and volunteered in serving which was helpful to us to communicate with other Tamilians.

Autowalas, Rickshawalas, Security guards, maids, labour (men as well as women), hospital workers, students and teachers were integral part of this successful event. “Thirst Quenchers”-as somebody referred to us was quite a big compliment and it really felt good to see that what makes us smile are these little actions which defines us each day and can change the way we see the world today & tomorrow.  All which drives us to do such little actions is our trust, our believes and our faith.
I want to end this on one  quote of Buddha –

“If you light a lamp for someone else, it will also brighten your path.”

P.S.- I am really thankful to all the people- juniors, mates, management of college who empowered this initiation and make it a huge success. If you are more curious do ping me for more details.

Wander Diaries 101-My Dulcinea (Trip to Pondicherry & Pichavaram)

The travelogue:

Je Veux Etre avec toi

(Be with me as long as I live)

Mere beauty, how shall I describe you Pondi, my dulcinea

Being a student, it is required to manage your budget as well as enjoy your college life to the fullest. Pondicherry now known as Puducherry is a beautiful city known for its pristine beaches, amazing French architecture and umpteen wine shops flourishing in every street. Not only that, it is also Union territory of India which is the reason that there is low/no tax implied by government on people so the booze and electricity rates are quite low here.

We (Me and my friends) decided to go to Pondicherry as it was the last year of college and we have never gone for a long trip like this. So this would be a great time to rejoice. Starting with the train journey which costs about Rs. 35 from Egmore station (Chennai). we went to hotel “King City Residency”, got freshened up and then left for Paradise beach. It is a beautiful beach, less crowded and a perfect destination for photography sessions.

The increase in randomness in surroundings will increase the entropy of a system
Friendship in any form will always give happiness and ecstasy
Sometimes inclination is required to live a straight life

Other places to visit includes: Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus(church), Rock Beach, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Immaculate Conception Cathedral(church), Varadharaja Temple and many more.

The best thing you can do is hire a scooty or bike (About Rs 400 for full day ), go on and complete your wanderlust. Many food outlets and market in Mission Street are good “ADDAs” for hanging out and shopping.

Now for good and delicious food at cheap rates, I will definitely refer the one and only Punjabi Dhaba in Mission Street. This is where we had our relishing dinner (cost around Rs. 100/person). In spite of that this white town designed in French architecture is a must watch. There is a lot of variety of unmatched continental cuisine which will make you forget that you are in South India.

The witty ideas come from brains which are powered by stomach

The first place that knocks your mind when you hear about Pondi is ‘Rock beach.’ This place has a Gandhi statue and where crowd of bazillions is always there (I don’t know yet). But the place contains some swag energy which always brings out a good DP and a moment of peace and tranquility. After more foods & drinks and dancing on “DESI” turn-on songs, some of us came here and clicked the amazing pics at 4.30 a.m. It came so good that even crabs were peeping out of their crevices to watch it.

The candid expression is the window to your soul and yourself.
Some views open up the shutter to unspoken words and unheard voices

After the  breakfast from Hot Breads, we spent the next dawn in Pichavaram. It has the world’s second largest mangrove forest (the first being Sunderbans in West Bengal) which also happens to be a famous shooting place for many movies like Dasavthaaram. There they had two options- Row Boat or Motor Boat. The buzzing of motor, less time of travel and high cost of Motor Boat made us opt for Row Boat which was much more peaceful and cheaper. The pic below is of the travel van in which we went from Pondi to Pichavaram

Never forget the three W- Wander Car, Wander lust and Wander Swag
Beauty is not when something is added, it is something when nothing is left to take away

The canopies, the little sublets of water with cage like topography had plethora of birds chirping and screeching all the way. The soothing weather and the boatman’s explanation totally nailed it. Picking molluscs and prawns from the river bed is a thriving business there apart from fishing and farming. The depth of this place varies from 2 feet deep to 7 feet deep. From the shallow areas, these are picked by hands.

The ones who trade all their present for other”s future
The master has failed more than the beginner has ever tried

I can not move mountains or oceans, but what about exploring them together

Okay well, don’t forget to bring cash as there is no ATM nearby, Plastic is totally banned here. Bring DSLR, make your memories worth. Leave back your footprints and take good pictures and memories from here because “Kal Ho Na Ho” (This story may not be there tomorrow).

Last but not the least- I want to  thank the one behind all the struggles, the one with the sacrificing heart, the one with the magical fingers-Mayank Agarwal

My New Year Resolution(2017)

 My New Year Resolutions(2017):

Happy New year guys!!

It is 2017. I hope you all are enjoying the new year, the new stuff, the new you. Well, all of you are probably bored by all of  these stuffs and that it gets annoying.I personally didn’t like them either in the beginning and if any of my friends started it then i will probably tell them to shut up. But now my opinion has changed, think of it this way were you the same person you were in 2017 as you were in 2016?

If no, then continue reading…

Things happened, some were terrible, some were messy while some were tangy. But the most important thing is that with all that we grew up every passing second, every minute, every hour and everyday because life is  a food which is to be sparkled with sugar and salt. Both are white but changes the taste all together. Both have their own significance and are required in proper proportion otherwise the food will not taste good.

All I ask you is that now it’s time to change because the thing which remains constant is CHANGE and don’t you think  you need some goals, some things to look forward to, some milestones to achieve??

Your resolutions can be as small as “smile more often” or as big as “wake up early”( waking up in the morning is a big task). You may want to learn a new skill or maybe want to practice more on a skill. From “help mom” to “eat together as a family”, it can be anything it doesn’t matter what, just tiny little things that change you into a better person, makes you HAPPY.

So, you can comment down below and tell me what your resolutions are😀

P.s. :- The image on the top has my resolutions on it 😀

One for the Kitchen and One for the Soul

ONE for the Kitchen and ONE for the Soul

“The best way to live the life of your dreams is to start living the life of your dreams Today, in every little way that you possibly can”

                                                                                                 – Mike Dooley

Let me ask you some questions. “Do you like what you are doing for living?”

“Are You happy with your current boring and tedious job which includes doing some boring stuff ?”

If your answer is yes, it is because of the reason you  have negotiated with this life and moved on with the deal. And I am not saying that it is wrong. It is the source of your income that runs your kitchen and feed your bellies. It is the funding to your as well as your family’s education and well- being. One cannot just ignore the fact that it is the reward which is earned for all the hard work done physically as well as mentally by our bloodlines as well as friends.

If you think no, this is because you think you are passionate, you know the following questions: What is the right food for your soul? What is the thing which drives you insane? What is the extent of sacrifices you can do to satisfy this yearning?

The direction does not choose you, you choose the direction

Okay, this is not a show-off stuff or provides a practical solution to monetary problems we face in our country. But this is something artistic, this is something we can just feel. Now I want to ask you one more question.

“Are you ambitious?”

Yes !

Yess !!

Yesss !!!

I think the majority, or maybe all of you will go for a yes,

*Do you see it as a good thing or a bad thing??

Good thing, right!!

Of Course it is something individualistic & selfish, it helps you achieve your goals. Now think it for a moment: Many People you see are doing something for the society, they are not doing for their individual growth, they are looking at making and developing our nation and world a better place, Maybe you would not know. But the fact is you and I, as a generation are very selfish.

This question might not come to your mind right now as you are just passing the phase, but later on when you will do the profession you REALLY like, you will think, “Hey. I guess this is what I want. This is the reason I am ambitious but isn’t it selfish?” But when this question arises, which it will, know the answer is that even though ambition is selfish, you are going to do some collateral advantages for other people. Your ambition is going to drive other people to be more ambitious which will lead to the further development of not just the country but the world as a whole.

I am ambitious and have a goal. My goal for today is reaching out to you.Don’t dream money, Don’t dream fame- it’s not a genie. It won’t come to you.Don’t dream to become a C.E.O., Dream to become THE  C.E.O. of the company that you want.In short, be specific. Be Particular. Now, you can see my goal for today is specific, I will follow each and every footstep to get there.

It is also said that if you keep doing one thing for long enough, you become good at it. And if you are good at something never do it for free.(The Dark Knight)

With your skill, you create a market for yourself and money will follow the skill you possess.

*This whole content is percept of one of the TED talks of Abish Mathew(Stand Up Comedian)

Now coming back to the pavilion, if you are in the struggling stage, you should follow this simple idiom: ONE FOR THE KITCHEN AND ONE FOR THE SOUL.

If you are an amateur artist, you have to live at a meager income status to live your life. So it’s better to do some alternate job to help fund your living as well as passion.

One for the kitchen and one for the soul. This might sound non-glorious story which no one is going to talk about. Nobody is going to talk about what you did for kitchen, what you did for your passion will only be reflected. You will have to make some sacrifices because you do have responsibilities and family to look upon and be answerable to them.

One can achieve anything by feeding his belly as well as on’s soul

To sum up, it’s the creativity and diligence blend which is the requisite of a successful lifestyle which can feed our bellies as well as soul. We have to dream specific, know our responsibilities, being more creative than a doer. In order to step on the planet you want to live, you have to experience all the planets and the suns.
